Overview & Experience

Attorney Colleen S. Butler is a native of Ruston, Louisiana. She graduated from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

After graduating from ULM, Colleen attended Louisiana Tech University where she earned a Master of Counseling and Guidance with a concentration in Human Services in 2016.

In 2019, Colleen earned her Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center, graduating with cum laude honors. During her time at SULC, Colleen was a member and editor of the Journal of Race, Gender and Poverty in which her article pertaining to the legal rights of adoptees was published. Colleen also participated in the juvenile legal clinic offered by Southern University Law Center. During her last semester at SULC, Colleen had the opportunity to participate in an externship with the District Attorney’s Office in the 15th Judicial District.

After graduating with her Juris Doctorate, Colleen began her legal career in the 4th Judicial District as an Assistant District Attorney at the Ouachita Parish District Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted domestic violence. She was there for over three years and gained invaluable experience. Although covid delayed trials, Colleen nonetheless successfully tried and won over ten cases in the brief time she was there. Colleen also held countless Gwen’s Law and Bond hearings, resulting in violent offenders being held without bond while awaiting trial. Throughout the last two years of her time with the District Attorney’s Office, Colleen acted as the Chief Prosecutor over the Domestic Violence division, supervising one additional attorney and five staff clerks. Colleen was a member of Ouachita Parish’s Safe Task Force and worked closely with the Family Justice Center, the Wellspring Center, and local law enforcement agencies. Colleen also taught the legal portion of training for upcoming law enforcement officers at the North Louisiana Delta Training Academy.

Colleen is now a family law attorney, focusing primarily on custody. She resides in West Monroe, Louisiana, with her fiancé and three children.
